WHAT

What’s Camp Make-A-Game you might ask? Camp Make-A-Game is a camp that teaches campers how to create digital and physical games. Mornings are spent indoors with digital screen instruction, teaching kids to use point-and-click game creation tools. Because these tools don’t require coding, most of the instruction can focus on design principles like game mechanics or game feel and not just be focused on technical hurdles. Afternoons are spent outdoors, discussing and playing physical games like tag and soccer – and then the kids will re-design the rules and play the modified games, learning about game design while getting some exercise. By the end of the week, they’ll be game makers!

WHEN

Mon July 15 – Fri July 19
Camp will run from 9am-3pm with a break for lunch.

WHO

For ages 8-12.

WHERE

Maria A. Schuka Toronto Library Branch
1745 Eglinton Avenue West

Space is limited. Call 416-394-1000 to register or for more information. This is a featured Summer Wonder Camp.

TICKETS ON SALE: Emergent Contraptions https://test.handeyesociety.com/2018/05/03/tickets-on-sale-emergent-contraptions/ Thu, 03 May 2018 13:00:28 +0000 http://handeyesociety.com/?p=27321

Mechanics of emergence are game rules that can trigger and influence each other in combinations and cascades, making a dynamic whole that’s much greater than the sum of its parts. In this workshop, we’ll experiment with creating, customizing, and combining simple modular Unity scripts and prefabs to build complex Rube Goldberg machines with an emphasis on physics and decoupled interactions.

Rich gameplay interactions don’t always need huge complex systems and one-off scripts to drive them. Sometimes all you need is a few simple rules that can stack & combine relentlessly.

When we focus on simple modular interactions, we build up a toy box that level designers can combine in myriad ways to create new challenges and experiences, and that players can remix and improvise upon emergently.

Moreover, this focus on independent interactions can help us avoid the rigidity & brittleness that can come with large, coupled codebases, making it easier for many creators to collaborate on a project and try new ideas without breaking everything.

To explore this idea, we’ll start from a simple toy box of interactions and use them to build zero-player autonomous games – contraptions that run or fall apart on their own – experimenting with how one event can trigger the next and the next in cascades, and how we can invent new toys to inject into the mix, multiplying the possibilities at our fingertips.

About the Instructor

Douglas Gregory / @D_M_Gregory
Douglas Gregory has worked in the game industry for 11 years, starting in indie games and currently working on Starlink: Battle for Atlas at Ubisoft Toronto. Douglas also teaches game mechanics design and economies at Sheridan College, game jams avidly, and serves as a community moderator on GameDev.StackExchange.

Inspiration from the instructor on this workshop:

“This workshop was inspired by Rube Goldberg machines generally, and specifically the Great Ball Contraption: a collaborative machine-building project at LEGO conventions (see it in action!). Each GBC participant brings a module meeting simple specifications, and on-site they’re assembled into a giant machine that works seamlessly together, even though no one planned out the whole contraption in advance.

I think we can use this as a model and playground for thinking about game mechanics that can combine and remix in ways beyond any one designer’s plan, creating large and fruitful spaces of potential play.

More Experimental Game Design Workshops!

TICKETS ON SALE: Phaser.JS ProcGen Party https://test.handeyesociety.com/2018/04/14/tickets-on-sale-phaser-js-procgen-party/ Sat, 14 Apr 2018 13:00:54 +0000 http://handeyesociety.com/?p=27167

A workshop in how to write procedural games in javascript using the Phaser.js game engine, and how to work in a narrative more meaningful than the usual “grab item and go.”

Phaser.js is a free and well-tested platform for making 2D games using javascript. Thanks to recent advances in the Javascript tooling environment, these games can now be exported relatively easily to the app store or to a desktop environment for play. This workshop is appropriate for current Javascript developers who would prefer to work with a familiar environment to get started.

In this workshop, we’ll provide a working, current boilerplate to get Phaser packed with Webpack and transpiling using Babel. We’ll go through how to maintain a game state using Redux, developed to maintain Facebook’s game state. On the creative side, we’ll be learning how to think through making a game a little stranger by starting with something familiar and changing it to something more personal.

About the Instructor

Alex Leitch / @aeleitch
Alex Leitch is an award-winning kinetic sculptor and digital artist who lives and works in Toronto, Canada. Their most recent work includes the Nebula Space Derby, a game about racing whales with your brain developed for a LARP bar night in Toronto, and Hothouse, a Toronto Arts Council-sponsored installation of large-scale robot flowers for Come Up To My Room 2017 at the Gladstone Hotel. Alex teaches Game Design 1 at OCADu. They love video games that make life’s little indignities into unsettling interactions.

Inspiration from the instructor on this workshop:

“Games are such a fun pain in the ass to make. Wouldn’t they be more fun if we could cooperate with advanced software to take the pain out and put more interest in? This workshop was inspired by the procedural, repetitive nature of work such as Sophie Calle’s “Take Care Of Yourself” and David Levine’s “Bystanders” – works where the hand of the artist is present in coordinating the efforts of many others to express the core dream of the work.

I want to bring the cleverness of Reigns’ barometers and Tinder’s swiping into broader play, while also making games more accessible to programmers already familiar with tooling and components for more conventional applications. Come learn some JS! I want to take an afternoon consider truly esoteric nonsense with you! And talk about what contemporary art even means!”

TICKETS ON SALE: Establishing Scene and Crafting the Beginning of a Game https://test.handeyesociety.com/2018/04/04/tickets-sale-establishing-scene-crafting-beginning-game/ Wed, 04 Apr 2018 13:00:23 +0000 http://handeyesociety.com/?p=27068

This is a workshop on defining the expectations of a player in the very first parts of a game. Not just for establishing setting or mood, but for purposefully crafting the mind of the player around what your game might be. A carefully crafted image for conducting powerful experiences.

Learn how to meaningfully combine gameplay and narrative in this technical workshop by game artist Taylor Bai-Woo, aka FromSmiling (Gloam Collective, Osteotic Bypass). Taylor will start by leading participants through her own game, the psychologically unsettling First Person Shooter Frail Shells, explaining her creative and technical decisions along the way. As a group, you will then work together with the instructor to brainstorm ideas for the beginning of a game, and then learn how to create it in Unity. At the end of the workshop, participants will swap the games they’ve made, followed by discussion about the effectiveness of the storytelling and ways to convey meaning through mechanics. Taylor will facilitate this exercise with technical and design support.

About the Instructor

Taylor Bai-Woo / @fromsmiling
Taylor Bai-Woo is a game maker (artist, programmer, designer) from Toronto, Canada that co-owns a studio called Gloam Collective (working on a game called Bravery Network)! Outside of her studio (sometimes inside) she tends to make weird explorative games, usually ones that set an expectation and then break it in the best ways possible. She cares a lot about characters, atmosphere, and building a world that doesn’t necessarily make sense, but gives a feeling.

Notes from the instructor on this workshop:

For me this is about how I’ve broken games down into a very simple language of design. It’s about how people’s motivations work and what kind of attitudes different people might come into a game with. It’s about giving as powerful an experience and expression as possible to a player and to as many as possible. The design I’m talking about here is also the same way I look at everyday systems beyond games. Design as a language. Designs as accessibility. I have a strong belief that design shouldn’t inhibit people’s ability to navigate systems, especially essential systems. I feel that having a strong understanding of how to play with design and bringing people to specific states of minds through design is a very crucial part of how we make the world a better place.

Experimenting through the lens of The Platformer, an enduring & familiar genre.

Droqen: “I’ve been making platformers for years upon years, and I’ve built a handy tool for building basic platformers in Unity. It should be just enough to sidestep the structural work involved of making the basic framework of a game so that we can focus on experimental design.

You’ll be learning how to devise a valuable core game mechanic (a “gimmick”), how to prototype it, and how to develop it further without succumbing to listlessness or feature creep.

Finally, this workshop is not about learning how to make platformers — it’s about how to make gimmicks (platformers are just the vehicle I’m most comfortable with personally). You should be able to apply these skills to any genre of your choice… even one that doesn’t exist yet.”

This workshop is inspired by games such as: Asphyx, Corrypt, La-Mulana.

About the Instructor

Droqen@droqen

I think about games too much. I also make them. I never want to stop growing alongside the games I make.

Notes on this workshop:

Asphyx; Corrypt; La-Mulana; these games adhere to simple, known forms but explore concepts beyond their genre. For example: at its heart, Asphyx could have been any sort of game (a game that asks you to hold your breath in circumstances only partially under your control), but it utilizes elements of the nature of platformers to drive that home: e.g. when it drops the player into the water suddenly (surprise!). /// I think games are really guilty of doing a lot of predictable genre-serving stuff. I can’t think of any standout examples outside games, I think because outside games this is sort of more normal…

Video game designers tend to fixate largely on creating experiences to be shown on a digital display. This workshop is aimed to get designers also thinking about the social and physical aspects of the games they create. There’ll be discussion about real life rules fuzziness and playing to the strengths of your chosen medium. Then participants will be encouraged to test their physical game rapid prototyping skills.

It is a good skill for game designers to possess is the ability to deconstruct the world around them, so the first lesson will be a primer on basic media literacy. Afterwards we’ll use this knowledge to deconstruct the models of play that digital and physical games employ. Examples will be shown, and played, of games that already experiment in this space. Then participants will then be challenged to make physical games that are on some level impossible to replicate in a digital manner.

Notes on this workshop:

The core driving idea is that the shift to the digital space moved the market away from games requiring face-to-face interaction. This is a shame because manipulating people’s behavior is the most interesting design space, for me. The modern board game renaissance, as well as the ongoing success of tabletop role-playing games are a testament that face to face interaction is a very successful, and even lucrative tool to explore.  Looking at your player 2 in the eye sparks something that can’t be recreated online (yet). Digital games worth trying that already play in this space are Johann Sebastian Joust, as well as Bounden.

More Experimental Game Design Workshops!

The Hand Eye Society is proud to present a series of workshops that encourages participants to create games in a new light. Coordinated by game-makers known for their thoughtful and innovative approaches to playful media, these workshops attempt to educate from more experimental, alternative perspectives. Participants will be able to take home useful technical skills, while being encouraged to explore unique game mechanics and meaningful themes in their own practice. This program is made possible by the generous support of the Ontario Arts Council.
